about

Followers of Folk and Country music know that there are many ways a person can encounter an untimely death.

In Country songs a person can be run over by a train, be kicked in the head by a mule or be shot by Johnny Cash in Reno, so he can just watch you die.

In Folk songs death is more romantic. You can be hanged for being a jolly Highwayman, you can be drowned at sea, stabbed by a lover or be abducted by the Queen of Elf Land.

In Blues, death is straight-forward. You can be shot by “Stag” Lee Shelton, die from bad whiskey, be mob-lynched or be eaten by ‘gators in the badlands. But in this wretched tale of love gone wrong by bluesman Tim Griffin, the homicide involves adding a little extra to the foundations to a garden patio or veranda.

Nobody was hurt recording this track, just our sore ribs and damp eyes from laughter.

lyrics

Better In The Ground

She looks much better in the ground,
She looks much better in the ground.
She didn’t make a sound, as I was pushing her down,
She looks much better in the ground.
She was the cutest little girl in town;;
The cutest little girl around.
She take me by the hand and showed me how to be a man,
The cutest little girl in town.
But she broke my heart in two;
Broke my little heart in two.
Lightning cracked; my soul turned black,
She broke my little heart in two.
So I made a little rendezvous;
I met her at Bristol Zoo.
Tried to feed her to the lions, but then she started cryin’
There was only one thing left to do...
Chorus.......
Her mama called my telephone;
Her mama called my telephone.
“Have you seen my daughter, she’s out later than she oughta,
I think she might be six feet below?”
Chorus....... (repeat)
She was one hell of a lady, but now she’s pushing up daisies,
She looks much better in the ground.
Well I pushed her down the well, now she’s swimming in Hell,
She looks much better in the ground.
For thirty long years, she filled me with tears,
She looks much better in the ground.
Oh yes she does..........
