Bird On A Wire

from DEAD ROSES (Album) by Garrington T Jones

/

about

The centuries-old practice of tying songbirds to wires and using them to attract or call to other birds, so they too could then be trapped, was barbaric. The wired songbirds had limited freedom of flight. They could fly around, but only within the constraint of the length of their tether.

When I toiled in a factory job, I yearned to break the chains of the daily grind and fly far away. But like many millions of ordinary working people around the world, I was tethered to my job, with no escape. Yes, I too was a bird-on-a-wire.

lyrics

Bird On A Wire

Sometimes I wonder why I am here at all?
I’ve left my other life outside the factory door.
From eight to six, I’m running down the clock,
Life on the shop-floor sure as hell don’t rock.

On days like these; I look up to the sky.
On days like these; will I tumble; will I fly?
To find new horizons far away from here,
And break the chains that always hold me tight.
I’m a bird on a wire.

There were times when I never had a care,
Yes, there were times when I had my dreams to share,
And those summer days were always free and easy,
Before the chores of work began to bind and seize me.

On days like these; I ask myself why?
On days like these; will I crumble; will I fly?
To find new horizons far away from here,
And break the chains that always hold me tight.

Every Friday night, I like to play it hard,
And carry-on with the local beauties.
I’ll spend my weekly pay with the boys down at the club,
But on Monday, I’m back here on the line.
Like a bird on a wire.

Bird on a wire………….....…….Bird on a wire.
Bird on a wire…………….....….Bird on a wire.
Bird on a wire………….....…… Bird on a wire.
I will fly away from here.......Bird on a wire.
I will fly away from here.......Bird on a wire.
I will fly away from here.......Bird on a wire.
