Chris Wilson was a highly respected Australian blues musician.
He featured in a number of collaborations with prominent Aussie acts including the Sole Twisters, Harem Scarem and Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls and fronted his band Crown of Thorns.
An active member of the Melbourne music scene, Chris Wilson made six solo albums before his untimely death from Pancreatic Cancer in January 2019.
This track is featured on Chris’s “Flying Fish” album (2012).
I first heard the song in December 2018, when I was laid-up in Cairns, thanks to a 36 hour tropical storm. I was taken by the sentiment of the lyrics and Chris’s wonderful deep, gravelly voice; so penetrating, so soulful.
I hope my interpretation of the song does justice to Chris Wilson because his outstanding contribution to Australia’s music industry should be celebrated and remembered.
lyrics
I Believe The Unions Will Rise Again One Day
I believe the unions; will rise again one day,
And ever’ working man and women fight to make their pay.
Where people demand dignity and they just won’t be denied,
I believe the unions, will rise again with pride.
When Billionaires plea poor man
And will not pay their share.
When conditions are eroded
And compassion is too rare.
When the value put upon a life sits against the bottom line,
I believe the unions, will rise again in time.
I believe the unions; will rise again one day,
Whenever’ working man and women fight to make their pay
Where people demand dignity and they just won’t be denied,
I believe the unions, will rise again with pride.
When the rosters keeps us from our homes,
And our family’s start to fray.
When the worker strikes for their’s to hold,
For a somehow better day.
When all colours, creeds and countrymen,
Defend the picket line;
I believe the Unions will rise again in time.
They’ll rise again; they’ll rise again,
We’ll rise again; they’ll rise again.
Where people demand dignity and they just won’t be denied,
I believe the unions, will rise again with pride.
