Sitting in a bar in Cairns, Australia, I met a roadie who had lived most of his life working with touring bands. He had seen it all, but in his later years, he was still working, “breaking down” and “setting-up” gigs for the “talent”. Although his hard-days were behind him, this quietly spoken, non-smoker, non-drinker, vegetarian and well read man, said he still got a kick out of live music. What a guy!
This song is for the behind-the-scenes heroes of showbiz.
lyrics
Roadcases
Towns on the Interstate are flashing by;
Silhouettes against a reddening sky,
It's another dawn of another day.
I’ll try to catch some sleep as we go;
Got to be in Cairns mid-afternoon,
It's another show and we're on our way.
There’s Motown disco playing on the bus,
The Noise Boys are reminiscing,
About another time; about another place.
I’ve got myself inside this book!
“Fat Man Blues” by Richard Wall,
I've got the time; I've got the pace.
First in; last out,
That's what this game is all about,
And I wouldn't want it any other way.
Road case those amps,
Haul the trusses, load the lamps,
We'll be rigging up a show just for you.
Every night my head is full of dreams
Of all "The Talent" that I've served in my time.
With broad smiles, they line-up on the stage
To glad-hand me
And pat my back
And clap their hands
Call out my name
They hand me gifts
And wads of notes
And then, send me on my way to another day.
Security comes with a yellow pass,
They wave us to the arena stage,
It's another night, it's another show.
These road cases won’t move themselves,
The humpers push them down the ramp,
On to another stage; get ready to go.
First in; last out,
That's what this game is all about,
And I wouldn't want it any other way.
Unpack those amps,
Haul the trusses, set the lamps,
We're rigging up a show just for you.
Just for you.
Just for you.
Just for you.....
